Dear Members, Supporters and Moviegoers,
There are so many activities that happen at the Triplex each month besides our regular film showings, that I’ve decided to write a monthly column Behind the Screens as a way of keeping you, our donors and members, up to date on anything you might have missed in the newspapers, that didn’t make the papers, and to give you a sneak preview of what’s coming up.
First things first! JOAN BAEZ is coming to our theater in person with the directors of the documentary “I Am a Noise,” on March 2nd at 4 pm for a talkback after the film. This documentary includes interviews, home movies, diaries and audio recordings that provide insight into Joan’s life and career. A living legend in our theater for a fundraiser is beyond our wildest dreams, and we can’t believe how magically this has all come together. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to see and hear Joan and the film’s directors Miri Navasky and Karen O’Connor.
I am also thrilled to announce that we signed a contract on January 3rd with well-known Berkshire County restauranteur Josh Irwin (Cantina 229, MoonCloud) to open a new restaurant named Juju’s in the space adjacent to the Triplex. Josh’s plans call for breaking through our lobby wall so that moviegoers will have accessibility to his food, or they can enter through Juju’s front door from the Triplex patio. Josh will be offering a specially created popcorn-sized fried chicken as well as popcorn-sized fried vegetable treats, two different salads and his beloved soft serve ice cream in cones and cups. Can’t wait! Josh hopes to open in early May in time for the summer season.
We had 160 people come to the Triplex for a free community showing on January 15th, MLK Day, for the moving film “Till” based on the story of civil rights icon Emmett Till with a talkback with two of the film’s producers, Keith Beauchamp and Thomas Levine. The following day 130 eighth grade students from Dubois Middle School and Richmond Consolidated School came to a free showing of the film and a talkback by Mr. Beauchamp and Mr. Levine. The discussions and questions were lively and engaged at both showings.
The Triplex’s Outreach Program will bring “Till” to the entire sophomore class at Pittsfield High School and Taconic High School on February 13th and February 15th respectively. There will be a talk back with producer Tom Levine on those days and in March there will be a showing of the film to the entire Pittsfield Community with producer and civil rights activist Keith Beauchamp leading the talkback. We are so grateful to the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, the Mass Cultural Council and the local Cultural Councils of Great Barrington, Monterey, New Marlborough, Otis, and Tyringham for sponsoring these important community showings both in North and South County.
We are pleased to welcome to the Triplex the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), who will be holding a class on New American Cinema (1967-1980) beginning April 3rd and meeting every Wednesday morning at 9:30 am for 6 weeks. Director and producer Deborah Reinisch will be teaching the class, and the course will look at the masterworks of a new generation of filmmakers who reinvented American Cinema while revitalizing a failing Hollywood. To register for this class, you will need to first become a member of OLLI at Berkshire Community College and then register for the class ($50 per person). Learn more about membership at OLLI. Upcoming calendar events in March and April. March 2 – Joan Baez Fundraiser - “I Am a Noise” March 10 – Oscar Party – Movie trivia games, food/drink and fun! March 14 - “In the Loop”- talkback by actor David Rasche. March 26 – Boondocks – “Chunking Express” – an immersive experience. April 11th - “Freud’s Last Session” – talkback by screenwriter Mark St. Germain. Joint fundraiser with Great Barrington Public Theatre. Details to follow. In closing, I would like to remind everyone that we are a community-owned nonprofit, and although we have come a long way since those first days when we started our grassroots movement to save the Triplex, we still must continue to fundraise to complete the construction of our fourth theatre and meet our other financial obligations. So please donate or become a member at thetriplex.org or if you can’t do either, then support us by coming to the movies! With gratitude, Nicki Wilson President of the Board of Directors Triplex Cinema Inc. The illustration for Behind the Screens was created by Erika Crofut - erikacrofut.com
