Spring is for families.
The rolling procession of Mother’s Day, graduations, Father’s Day, and wedding season puts a focus on the closest relationships in our lives — whether it’s the family we’re born into or the ones we create. Complicated family dynamics have always been a cornerstone of the movies, fueling the spectrum from comedy to tragedy, and they’re front and center at The Triplex this May.
A Nice Indian Boy, 2025
This week alone brings three very messy families to our screens: In Bob Trevino Likes It, a daughter abandoned by her father ends up forming a friendship with a stranger online who has the same name as him. In On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, a family in Zambia resurfaces secrets after the death of a “beloved” uncle. Even Marvel gets in on the family action with Thunderbolts*, the story of a group of failed superheroes and mercenaries who team up when the rest of the world rejects them.
Throughout this month, our Limited Engagement series explores what happens when families collide through marriage, with titles like A Nice Indian Boy (May 9th), The Wedding Banquet (May 16th), and Bad Shabbos (May 23rd) digging into the culture clashes and traditions that shape the families we build for ourselves.
Lilo & Stitch, 2025
And blockbusters like the horror thriller Sinners (May 9th) and family adventure Lilo & Stitch (May 23rd) remind us that even movies about vampires or adorable aliens are often really about the ways families adjust to loss and change.
We often look to the movies as an escape, but with filmmakers drawing from their real lives to create these stories, it’s no wonder the same family themes show up again and again. They help us see ourselves on screen, to laugh and cry with recognition. Because even in the most far-fetched, far-out stories, it’s — to quote the great cinematic philosopher Dom Toretto — all about family.
