Every movie, from major studio productions to rarely-seen indies, shares a common thread: someone who refused to give up on it. If a movie exists, it’s because one person — or, more often, a team — wouldn’t take no for an answer.
We’re celebrating that stubborn filmmaking spirit with two special events at The Triplex this week. On Sunday, we welcome young directors, ages 13–19, for our Young Filmmakers Festival, a showcase of short films across genres, from personal drama to surreal comedy, fiction to documentary.

Then, on Thursday, we’re joined by writer-director Zia Anger for a screening and conversation about her acclaimed new movie My First Film. Originally a performance piece combining clips of her unfinished movie Always All Ways, Ann Marie with spoken and written reflections, Anger’s new film adaptation is an ode to the chaotic journey of creation.
My First Film, 2024
My First Film reminds us that simply crossing the finish line — making something, even if it turns out differently than imagined — is an achievement. Creative work requires vulnerability, and success often means putting a piece of yourself on screen. The filmmakers joining us this week, as well as all those we’ve hosted this year, show us that creative work is hard work.
I hope you’ll join us to celebrate them and, hopefully, walk away inspired to create something yourself.
